It’s the same thing with the feedback

Do you remember when you were little and you played hot and cold to find a hidden object?

Hearing “cold… so cold…” made you know you were getting further and further away. And that drove you , especially when that was the answer you got over and over again (Who didn’t want to win?) .

Then you would change course

moving away from the wrong path. And the heavenly music would come: “warm… hot… you’re burning!”

You were approaching the goal and that was all that mattered. Whether the prize was a treasure or an old sock hidden by your brother, it didn’t matter.

you give your content writers : feedback encourages them to stay on overseas data track when they’re doing well and to find the right path when they’re doing poorly.

And from here emerge two basic principles of feedback:

  1. Any feedback is better than no feedback. Just like in a game, it is very difficult to move forward and reach the goal if the other person doesn’t tell us anything.
  2. Constructive feedback requires a balance between positive and negative feedback. If you only give negative feedback, you’re just giving your keywords in your policy text writers a cold shoulder. They’ll be clear that they’re doing it wrong, but it’ll be harder for them to figure out how to do it better.

In other words, negative and positive feedback are two sides of the same coin. And your writers need both kinds of feedback to do their jobs well.

Or in the words of James Thornton, who leads a team of writers at Typeform:

Constant feedback is the cornerstone of a great writing team.
