Loneliness is not the same as being alone. Although loneliness is associated with social isolation, the two terms are not interchangeable. Isolation is an objectively measurable condition, determined by the number of social contacts a person has, while loneliness is a subjective experience. Often also in combination with your expectation. The difference between what you expect in terms of contacts, the quality of the contacts and what you actually have, can lead to loneliness.
